DONâTpanic.
The words banged around inside Ericâs head. Leaning forward, he gripped the steering wheel. Glancing at the speedometer, he dragged in a deep breath and eased his foot off the gas pedal. The carâs engine audibly ratcheted back, and he felt the gears downshift. Out ofhabit he checked the rearview mirror, assuring himself there were no flashing lights following him.
Pullinginto his drive, Eric barelyhad the engine cut before he was out and running inside. Gripping the doorframe on the way through and swinging toward the kitchen, Eric yanked open the drawer heâd swept Jayâs keys into. Stuffing them in his pocket, he did a fast check of the house. It appeared that no one had been here, everythingbeingright where heâd left it.
Striding down the hall to the master bedroom, he swung the upper half of his body through the door long enough to take a look at his night table. The box with the silver, tightly woven link collar was also exactly as heâd left it.
Eric was out of the house, back into his car, and heading to Jayâs house less than a minute later. Checking his speed as he guided the car onto the main road, Eric looked around, then pulled out his cell phone. How many people had he pulled over and ticketed for doing exactly what he was doing now? The last thing he needed was to be stopped for a traffic offense.
Hitting Jayâs number, he held his breath, then let it out in an obscenity when Jayâs phone went to voice mail. Knowing it was useless, but doing it anyway, Eric kept trying Jayâs number and kept getting voice mail until he was screeching to a stop in Jayâs drive. Jayâs Jeep was parked infront ofthe house.
Eric scrambled from his car and bolted to the Jeep. He searched all around it before running back to his car for some of his protective gloves. Pulling the gloves on as he strode back to the Jeep, Eric tested the doors. All were locked. He looked through the windows but didnât see anything that would cause immediate alarm.
Running from the Jeep, up the steps to the front door, Eric pounded on it, shouting, âJay! Jason!â He dug in his pocket for the house keys. Finally getting themout, he fumbled for a few seconds gettingthe door unlocked before he charged into the house.
It was obvious Jay, and probably his father, had beenthere. Eric went throughthe smallhouse, searching the rooms for his younglover, but the place was empty.
The house was not, however, without signs of what might have happened. One of the kitchen chairs was knocked over and things had been thrown off the kitchentable as wellas the smalltable near the door Jay would put his keys on.
Yanking his phone out, Eric spent a few minutes taking pictures of the space from various angles. Then he rifled through the remains of what had been on the table beside the door. There was a small pile of mail, a half-burned candle, and the broken glass from the dish Jay kept his keys in.
